THE FORKS

If you've never been to The Forks, you are missing out! This historic redevelopment is a great place to relax, enjoy the company of friends and family and take in some fabulous shopping. It's been that way for thousands of years!

Located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, it has been shown, through archaeological research, that The Forks was "the" meeting place some 6000 years ago.

In the mid 1700's - late 1800's, The Forks was home to the fur trade that helped establish this great country. To the north just a few hundred metres is the site of the Hudson Bay Company's Upper Fort Garry.

In more recent times (the late 1800's - early 1900's), The Forks was a hub of activity as a rail distribution centre. Goods would come into The Forks by train and be off loaded into the Johnston Terminal (which was a cold storage facility). The horses were stabled next door in what is now The Forks Market. The wagons would load up at The Johnston Terminal and set off to supply Winnipeg and beyond with goods from far and wide.
